FAQs
What is dual naming?
Dual naming is the approach whereby places are officially recognised by two distinct names. One name is usually of Aboriginal origin and the other of non-Aboriginal origin.
Where a park is currently identified by an existing non-Aboriginal name, such as Banks Reserve, an Aboriginal name can be put forward to be assigned as a dual name and sit alongside the existing non-Aboriginal name.
What is renaming
Renaming completely changes the name from a previously used name to a new name.
Who can propose an Aboriginal name be restored?
Any individual, group or organisation can propose an Aboriginal name be restored and recognised as an official name.
Such proposals must be endorsed by the relevant Traditional Owner group such as the City’s Boordiya Reference Group that comprises local Aboriginal Elders and leaders.
Where can I find out more information about dual naming?
The Aboriginal and Dual Naming Guidelines provide a framework for the naming of Western Australian geographical features and places with Aboriginal names.
These guidelines were developed by Landgate in consultation with local governments, Aboriginal organisations and other key stakeholders and highlight the importance of early engagement with the Traditional Owners.
