Consultation has concluded
Over the past several years the City has installed a number of traffic calming devices around the Mt Hawthorn Primary School to better manage traffic and improve road safety.
While it has proved successful in calming traffic originating from Scarborough Beach Road, Dover and Woodstock Streets there is still a concern about traffic and safe pedestrian crossing opportunities coming from Ellesmere Street.
Further, as there is no clearly defined crossing point in Matlock Street between Ellesmere and Killarney Streets there is a tendency for children and their guardians, to cross randomly when they see a break in the school traffic.
A pedestrian count conducted on 23 September 2020 indicated that in excess of 380 children and their guardians, walked to and from school via either Ellesmere Street or the northern end of Matlock Street. This was a combination of children being accompanied to school and the guardian walking home (both in morning and afternoon), the older children walking un-accompanied and unrelated pedestrians walking to and from the Mt Hawthorn Town Centre/Scarborough Beach Road.
What's proposed?
To encourage pedestrians and children to cross at the intersection where they can clearly be seen, rather than darting between parked cars, we are proposing to install a pedestrian crossing plateau. The plateau would be same design as the two located either side of the intersection of Woodstock Street, you can view the plan here.
The design of the plateau ensures that vehicles moving through the intersection are travelling at low speed which improves reaction times and reduces the potential severity of any accidents.
If approved, the works would be undertaken during the 2021 summer school holidays.
