Consultation has concluded
The City is pleased to announce the commencement of the Oxford Street North Upgrade project which seeks to enhance the Mount Hawthorn Town Centre along Oxford Street.
In 2016, the upgrade was put on hold to accommodate Water Corporation’s Pipes for Perth program. The Pipes for Perth program has now concluded along Oxford Street and we are excited to recommence this important improvement project.
The upgrade will improve visitor, pedestrian and cyclist amenity and bring this section of the town centre in line with its counter part along Scarborough Beach Road. It will provide a much improved physical connection between Leederville Town Centre and Mount Hawthorn Town Centre through a more unified town centre streetscape.
The upgrade incorporates the addition of:
38 Street Trees for enhanced shade and beautification;
A Red Asphalt Shared Space to denote the town centre area;
A Central Median for pedestrian refuge and improved walkability;
2 New Motorcycle Bay Areas to accommodate 5 motorcycles;
12 Bike Racks with locations to be determined in consultation with businesses; and
Low Profile Speed Humps to accommodate a potential 30km/hr Zone which will improve safety and town centre amenity.
Click below for full details of the scheduled works.
The upgrade requires the loss of 3 car parking bays north of Wilberforce Street and 2 car bays south of Wilberforce Street. To mitigate this loss, the City will negotiate the use of redundant No Stopping Zones to accommodate additional car bays. The City will also review the use of the Oxford Street Car Park and on-street parking along Wilberforce Street to ensure parking efficiencies are maximised and parking availability for town centre visitors is prioritised.
The upgrade will make the town centre an even more attractive destination for local businesses, residents and visitors and is an important step in the evolution of the Mount Hawthorn Town Centre.
Tree planting and concrete median stencilling is scheduled to commence Sunday 31 March 2019 with night works scheduled on Friday 12 April 2019 from 10pm-6am. To minimise disruption during this construction period, residents and businesses will receive an Information Bulletin prior to the commencement of works. Access to businesses will be maintained at all times via the footpath.
