Consultation has concluded

The City is proposing to name part of the lane running north-south between Loftus, Marian, Franklin and Shakespeare Streets in Leederville, known as Lot 66 on Plan 2330. The City invites you to share your thoughts on the proposal.

The laneway is currently unnamed.

Coroneos Lane

The proposed name is Coroneos Lane in commemoration of Panos (Peter) Coroneos, long term resident, business owner and prominent member of the Greek community. The name appears to satisfy Landgate's naming standards.

Mr Coroneos migrated to Perth in 1910 from Kythira, Greece, quickly establishing himself at the intersection of the Greek and wider community with his establishment the Royal Oyster Palace, Wellington Street, Perth (1912-1930). The Royal Oyster Palace became an important meeting place for Perth's Greeks, so much so that the union group, Hellenic Association, located their headquarters above the cafe when formed in 1918.

Living at 80 Tower Street, located under today's Mitchell Freeway, Mr Coroneos was a long term resident of Leederville. It is for his participation and support of the Greek community that the City supports in principle the proposal of the name ‘Coroneos Lane’.

Coroneos Lane satisfies the Landgate criteria for nomenclature in that it is:

  • Is a single name element followed by a road type;
  • Does not duplicate an existing road name within the local government area; and
  • The name is not used in an existing street or place in WA.

Coroneos Lane is non-compliant with the Landgate criteria for nomenclature:

  • No more than six letters long;

To support the application, the applicant has undertaken documentary research, which can be viewed in the Document Library.
