Update

Community feedback from this consultation has now been reviewed, along with findings from an earlier consultation for Britannia Road and Matlock Street Traffic Calming.

After careful consideration of all comments, the City of Vincent will now be looking at taking a holistic approach to the entire length of Britannia Road.

This approach will also include high priority actions proposed in the City’s Bike Network Plan such as investigating options to better connect the Principal Shared Path from the Freeway along Britannia Road to Oxford Street.

We would like to thank everyone who has taken the time and trouble to make contributions and comments so far.

We'll continue to share opportunities for ongoing participation in future traffic calming proposals for Britannia Road.

Background

The City of Vincent is considering introducing traffic calming measures at the corner of Britannia Road and Federation Street and welcomes community feedback on this proposal.

Vehicle speeds along Britannia Road, before taking the corner onto Federation Street, are a concern for some residents. Vincent is considering traffic calming measures to make the intersection safer for everyone.

Project details

The overall goal of the proposed traffic calming measures is to reduce vehicle speed, provide a safe crossing point for pedestrians and improve conditions for cyclists.

This combination of measures is expected to have a significant impact along the specified section of Britannia Road and Federation Street, with a focus on enhancing safety around corners.

Two options are proposed, one with a cycle lane, and one without. Both options involve the removal of some existing parking bays to facilitate the proposed changes.

On the diagrams below, the orange line represents the proposed cycle lane, and the yellow line shows the no parking areas.

Option 1 - with cycle lane

The orange line on this diagram represents the proposed cycle lane. This option provides dedicated space for cyclists, promoting safer and more accessible cycling within the area. It also includes:

  • A median island on the corner of Federation Street and Britannia Road
  • Two speed humps - one before the corner, in either direction of travel
  • A safer crossing point for pedestrians wishing to access the pedestrian footbridge and Britannia Reserve.

Option 1 - with cycle lane Option 2 - without cycle lane

This alternative maintains the yellow line, indicating the no parking areas. Although it doesn't include a dedicated cycle lane, this option still creates a safe environment for pedestrians and aims to reduce vehicle speed. It also includes:

  • A median island on the corner of Federation Street and Britannia Road
  • Two speed humps - one before the corner, in either direction of travel
  • A safer crossing point for pedestrians wishing to access the pedestrian footbridge and Britannia Reserve.
