40km/h Section of Vincent Street alongside Hyde Park

Update

This consultation is now closed, and feedback has been reviewed. As there was community support, a request was sent to Main Roads WA (MRWA) to approve the proposed speed reduction from 60km/h to 40km/h. This request was not supported by MRWA.

Vincent formally requested that MRWA consider a proposal for the speed to be dropped to 50km/h.

We can now advise that MRWA has confirmed the existing 60km/h speed limit on Vincent Street between William Street and Beaufort Street will be reduced to 50km/h. This speed reduction will be effective from 3 June 2024.

Background

The City of Vincent is seeking feedback on a proposal to reduce the speed limit from 60km/h to 40km/h on Vincent Street, from the intersection with William Street to Beaufort Street, Mt Lawley. We would like to know if you support this proposal - please take a few moments to complete the short survey below.

In 2018, the City of Vincent proposed a 40km/h speed zone trial within our southern suburban residential areas to study the impact of slower speed limits. An independent report to Council, funded by the Office of Road Safety, found in the three years post the trial commencement, residents’ surveys demonstrated:

  • 13 per cent increase in resident support for the trial
  • 21 per cent increase in the perception of improved liveability
  • 34 per cent being more likely to choose walking or riding over local car trips.

It concluded that over time it is likely general traffic speeds will continue to decrease within Vincent as community expectation for people to drive safely increases.

An Update on Expanding 40km/h Speed Zones with the City of Vincent was presented to Council in February 2023 and this report is available to view in the Documents section to the right of this page.

Project Details

The City of Vincent is consulting on a proposal to reduce the speed limit from 60km/h to 40km/h on Vincent Street, from the intersection with William Street to Beaufort Street, Mount Lawley.

The proposed 40km/h speed limit on this section of Vincent Street would allow a continuous speed, extending from the existing 40km/h section of Vincent Street alongside Hyde Park, and a slower speed as vehicles are approaching activity centres.

Any proposal to reduce speed on our roads requires approval from Main Roads WA prior to implementation.

This speed reduction proposal aims to deliver ongoing safety benefits for the community:
