Planning Changes to Business Signs and Advertising
Part of our role at the City is to ensure the amount of advertising signs within our locality avoids proliferation and protects amenity and safety. Equally, we want to ensure a streamline planning process that provides adequate opportunity for business advertising.
External signs and advertising on private/business premises throughout Vincent is managed through the City's Local Planning Policy - Signs and Advertising.
Last year we engaged with the community in respect to business signage and advertising. This engagement helped us to better understand the community’s attitude to issues such as third party advertising, large format signs, window signs and advertising material more generally.
Based on the valuable feedback we received, we have amended our Local Planning Policy - Signs and Advertising.
The Policy’s general objective is to provide clear direction on acceptable sign design, and to streamline the application process for business advertising.
If approved by Council, the policy will apply to all signs on privately owned land including business signs.
The key modifications proposed through the Policy are to:
- Streamline the planning process to allow up to 4 signs (more for larger tenancies) without the need for planning approval.
- Prohibit third party advertising.
- Provide clear guidance for signs that requires planning approval.
- Streamline community event and sponsorship signs.
- Limit advertising on smoking and tobacco related premises.
- Prohibit signs that promotes alcohol, smoking and unhealthy food on City owned land.
