Ritz Lane

The proposed name is Ritz Lane in reference to a theatre that existed on the corner of Oxford Street and Scarborough Beach Road, and it appears to satisfy Landgate's naming standards. The name Ritz had been associated with the area for thirty five years, first with the Ritz Picture Gardens from 1925 to 1938, and later the Ritz Theatre occupied the site from 1938 until the 1960’s.

Since demolition of the Ritz Theatre, the site featured a service station from the 1960’s until early 2000’s. The site is now home to a café, specialist medical services, and a series of apartments.

The lane selected is unnamed, and is located between Oxford and Faraday Streets, Scarborough Beach Road and Wilberforce Street. The name was proposed by a resident that lives adjacent to the lane, and has been supported for historical accuracy by the Library’s Local History Team.

Ritz Lane satisfies the Landgate criteria for nomenclature in that it is:

  • No more than six letters long;
  • Is a single name element followed by a road type;
  • Does not duplicate an existing road name within the local government area; and
  • The name is not used in an existing street or place in WA.
