Public Open Space Strategy

The City of Vincent has a unique blend of parks, reserves and civic spaces within its boundaries. These public open spaces provide our community with space to exercise, socialise and participate in recreational, art and cultural activities.

Public open space is land that is freely accessible by the community for a variety of purposes, including popular parks such as Hyde Park, local playgrounds, sporting fields and civic spaces like Mary Street Piazza.

The City, in collaboration with Dave Lanfear Consulting, have prepared a Public Open Space Strategy. This Strategy will act as a guiding framework to assist the City to plan and prioritise future investment, development and improvements in our public open spaces for the next 10-15 years.

The development of key actions as part of the Strategy will ensure the we are able to achieve the following objectives in relation to public open space:

• Maximise the value of open spaces for the community through improved amenity and functionality.
• Identify and respond to the impacts of development, population growth and demographic change on the open space network.
• Identify opportunities to improve access to and functionality of open spaces, and achieve a targeted increase in overall open space provision through innovative practices.
• Establish appropriate levels of service across the public open space hierarchy to guide decision-making and ensure diversity across the open space network.

Developing the Strategy

From May to August this year, we utilised a number of engagement tools and spoke with a variety of groups to develop the Strategy. We spoke with the Vincent Town Teams, various City advisory groups, the Community Engagement Panel (comprised of community members from the Imagine Vincent campaign), local sport and recreation clubs and the general public.

Following this engagement process, we reviewed your thoughts and ideas to develop the draft Public Open Space Strategy, which was then advertised to the community from the 14 November - 28 November 2018.

At the Ordinary Council Meeting on Tuesday 11 December 2018, Council adopted the Public Open Space Strategy.
