In 2014 the Beaufort Street Network included an action in the Better Beaufort Action Plan to name unnamed laneways, in the Mount Lawley/Highgate Town Centre, in consultation with the community. The City embraced this community driven initiative and in late 2015 invited you, our community, to help name the unnamed laneways.

From this call out you gave us 251 name suggestions. Following receipt of these, we undertook a comprehensive vetting process in consultation with the Department of Aboriginal Affairs, the Whadjuk Working Party and Landgate and 45 of the proposed names met Landgate’s criteria for naming.

These names were then further shortlisted based on the relevance of the name to the proposed laneway location and the accompanying information provided as part of the naming submission.

At the 5 February Ordinary Meeting of Council, Council endorsed 9 laneway naming recommendations which have now been approved by Landgate.

You can view the complete list of naming submissions in the Document Library and the 9 approved names and the meanings behind the names are outlined in the Name the Lanes Information Flyer.
