Background

The City of Vincent is developing a Planning Framework for Mt Hawthorn Town Centre and is asking the community to share their vision for the area.

Private development in Mt Hawthorn is guided by Vincent’s Policy No. 7.1.1 Built Form and improvements to the public realm are guided by the Mt Hawthorn Place Plan.

Vincent is preparing a plan for the Mt Hawthorn Town Centre to guide its future development. The plan will consider specific elements from seating options in the public realm, through to the scale and design of buildings in the private realm.

The Mt Hawthorn Town Centre is located between Braithwaite Park in the west, to Britannia Road in the south, incorporating Scarborough Beach Road and Oxford Street.

Mt Hawthorn Town Centre

The town centre has a unique landscape character and mix of traditional fine-grain shopfronts and emerging businesses.

Its pedestrian-friendly streets with generous tree planting contribute to a suburban village feel, attracting local residents and a variety of visitors from surrounding neighbourhoods.

Project details

The aim of this project is to guide future development for the Mt Hawthorn Town Centre. We are asking community to help shape what that should look like.

A Planning Framework and Place Plan is being prepared, which means that there will be one document to look at for all development within the Mt Hawthorn Town Centre.

The framework will consider each of the priorities listed in the Strategic Community Plan but is not limited by that.

A context analysis study has already taken place to help us understand the existing conditions, opportunities and constraints.

As part of this consultation process, we are asking people about the findings of this analysis, and their vision for the Mt Hawthorn Town Centre.

Feedback from the visioning surveys and workshops has now been reviewed. Some of the key takeaways from community are:

  • There is a strong sense of community, social interaction and connection.
  • People are attracted to the leafy green and active public places throughout the town centre - and the chance encounters that often arise.
  • Trees and enhancing tree canopy are a key priority and featured prominently in memories of the town centre and its vision for the future.

What will happen next?

Feedback from the visioning phase has been reviewed and the project has moved into the design phase. Once completed, a planning framework will be developed.

Once a draft is developed, a report will be presented to Council for endorsement to formally advertise.

If you provide your contact details when completing the survey, you will be notified when the report will be considered by Council. Anyone is welcome to attend the Council Briefing and Council Meeting to ask questions or comment on the proposal.

Information on this page is available in alternative formats on request.
