What is the difference between Heritage Areas and Character Areas?

Heritage Areas are places of ‘historic heritage significance’ with special qualities embodied in the built form.  They will generally be quite rare within a locality and will have some form of underlying aesthetic, social, scientific or historic cultural heritage value. The retention (i.e., prohibition of demolition) of contributory buildings is important to protect areas of historic heritage significance.

Character Areas aim to retain the character of the precinct through design that responds to distinctive characteristics of the area. Homes with character areas do not have the same levels of protection as those within heritage areas, for example a homeowner does not need planning approval to demolish their home.
