Menzies Park Floodlighting
This consultation is now closed.
New floodlights are being considered for Menzies Park in Mt Hawthorn and the City of Vincent is seeking community feedback on this proposal.
Background
As part of a review of unfunded capital sport and recreation projects in November 2023, Vincent has identified floodlighting at Menzies Park as a priority.
The criteria used for this assessment included community need/benefit, condition of the existing asset and the availability of external funding.
The project is currently unfunded and will be considered as part of Council's 2025/26 budget deliberations.
The Department of Sport, Local Government and Cultural Industries (DLGSC) has advised this project is eligible for Club Night Lights Program (CNLP) funding.
Project details
Located at the corner of Egina and Purslowe Streets in Mt Hawthorn, Menzies Park sportsground is regularly used for team sports by Mt Hawthorn Cardinals Junior Football Club and University Cricket Club as well as by a large number of casual sporting users.
It also features a fully fenced playground, public toilets and barbecue and is an approved dog exercise area, so is also very popular with the local community.
The existing lighting is no longer sufficient to meet the growing sporting and community needs and is due for replacement.
The replacement will require the installation of either four or six light poles. Generally speaking, the higher the pole, the fewer are needed.
Developments in lighting mean higher floodlights can create less light 'spill'. The photos to the right of this page illustrate this at Britannia Park.
The floodlights would be on automatic timer and we are proposing turn-off time should be between 8-9pm Saturday-Thursdays and 9.30pm on Fridays.
There is also an option to include community lights, which would extend the time available for passive use of the reserve such as dog-walking as well as enhancing safety. If installed, community lights would be positioned lower down the lighting pole and would also have a timed turn-off facility.
We are keen to hear from everyone, especially those who live closest to the park or who use the amenities there, about this proposal. Tell us your thoughts on the following aspects:
- Number of poles
- Turn-off times
- Community lighting
