Consultation has concluded

The City is proposing to name the laneway extending between Green Street and Scarborough Beach Road, parallel to Coogee and Flinders Streets, in Mount Hawthorn.

The proposed name (Masterson Lane) is in commemoration of Hazel Hawke and her family, who lived at 150 Coogee Street, Mount Hawthorn. She was born Hazel Masterson in 1929 and was of the first students to attend the Mt Hawthorn Infants’ School in 1938. Hazel was First Lady to Australia from 1983-1991, during which time, and later, she campaigned for education, women's issues, Indigenous rights and Alzheimer's and dementia care research. In June 2001 she was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia.

Masterson Lane satisfies Landgate’s criteria for a road name in that it:

  • is a single name element followed by a road type;
  • does not duplicate an existing road name within the local government area; and
  • the name is not used in an existing street or place in WA;

Masterson Lane does not satisfy the Landgate criteria in that it:

  • is more than six letters long.

This does not disqualify the name from being considered by Landgate after community approval.

Masterson Lane is considered pursuant to Criteria 2 of the City’s Road Naming Criteria – Vincent identities, including persons with historical connections to Vincent and a proven association with the area in which the naming proposal is located. This can include:

  • persons who have made a significant contribution to the area; and/or
  • persons who have made a significant contribution to the Vincent community.

The applicant's proposal and notes from our Local History Centre can be found in the Document Library.

Where is the lane?

The lane identified for naming extends between Green Street and Scarborough Beach Road, parallel to Coogee and Flinders Streets, in Mount Hawthorn.

The naming is to be applied to Lots 356, 353 and part of 351 on Plan 2503.

About the process

This laneway proposal was submitted to the City of Vincent by a community member. If a consultation receives community consent, the City will submit a road naming application to Landgate. Landgate will then approve or deny the application. The City will send letters to nearby residents and owners in regards to the outcome of this consultation. An alternative name for this laneway must be submitted via the online application form before the consultation period for this proposal closes. If an alternative name is found to be suitable, a separate consultation for that proposal will be advertised.
