Consultation has concluded

The City is proposing to name a laneway in the heart of Leederville.

The City has been working with a local community member to prepare two new naming proposals for an unnamed lane in Leederville. You are invited to share your thoughts.

The lane is located in the Leederville Town Centre, and provides access to a number of buildings including the Leederville Hotel. It runs parallel to Carr Place and Vincent Street, between Oxford and Loftus Streets, ending behind 212 Carr Place, in Leederville.

At the 15 December 2020 Ordinary Council Meeting, Council approved in principle concept plans for the upgrade of the subject laneway. These can be found in the Document Library.

The laneway is currently unnamed. A map identifying the laneway can be found in the Photos section of this page.

Option 1 – Electric Lane

The proposed name (Electric Lane) is in tribute to the Leederville Hotel being the first business in Leederville to have electric light in 1905.

Electric Lane satisfies Landgate’s criteria for a road name in that it:

  • is a single name element followed by a road type;
  • does not duplicate an existing road name within the local government area; and
  • is not in use in an existing street or place in WA.

Electric Lane does not satisfy the Landgate criteria in that it:

  • is more than six letters long.

This does not disqualify the name from being considered by Landgate after community approval.

Electric Lane is considered pursuant to Criteria 5 of the City’s Road Naming Criteria – A culturally significant historic event, architectural style, artwork, waterway or other culturally iconic element connected with the area.

The proposal for Electric Lane can be found in the Document Library.

Option 2 – Starlight Lane

The proposed name (Starlight Lane) is in tribute to both the star on the Leederville Hotel tower, which has been in existence for at least 20 years, and to the Leederville Hotel being the first building in Leederville to have electric light in 1905.

Starlight Lane satisfies Landgate’s criteria for a road name in that it:

  • is a single name element followed by a road type;
  • does not duplicate an existing road name within the local government area; and
  • is not in use in an existing street or place in WA.
