Leake Street and Alma Road Diagonal Diversion Trial
Project Update
The City of Vincent will be ending the diagonal diversion trial on the corner of Alma Road and Leake Street in North Perth.
In February, Vincent began a six-month trial of a diagonal diversion in response to ongoing community concerns about road safety in the area.
The trial involved the installation of a raised median placed diagonally across the intersection to split the four-way intersection into two L-shaped turns.
The trial was due to finish in July 2023.
Recent traffic data showed the trial impacted negatively on several nearby streets with higher traffic volumes, higher speeds and increased heavy vehicles on adjoining roads and laneways.
Vincent has received extensive community feedback and a petition from locals, with many raising safety and traffic concerns around the area.
A survey was conducted during the trial, with the majority of respondents not supporting the diagonal diversion.
As a result, at the 16 May Ordinary Council Meeting, Council voted to end the diagonal diversion trial and replace it with a four-way raised plateau.
Background
In February 2023, the City of Vincent started a six-month trial to address the volume of large commercial vehicles using residential streets around Leake Street and Alma Road in North Perth to access the shopping precinct.
The trial involves the installation of a raised median placed diagonally across the intersection to split the four-way intersection into two L-shaped turns.
The intent is to divert traffic off the local residential streets and on to the distributor roads.
During the six-month trial, we will be listening to community feedback.
The City will be collecting traffic data throughout the trial. This data will include traffic volumes (including heavy vehicles) as well as speed data along several streets in the vicinity of the trial area.
Community feedback, along with the traffic impact studies will inform the report to Council which is expected to be presented in September 2023.
