The City of Vincent is seeking community feedback on a proposal to name a laneway between Fleet and Loftus streets in Leederville, Manifis Lane.

Background

Vincent is home to a number of lanes that remain unnamed.

The City's Policy No. 2.28 Laneways and Rights of Way includes guidance on Road Naming Criteria (Item 5.2).

Landgate is the State organisation which approves the naming of roads and their Policies and Standards for Geographical Naming in Western Australia provides further information on this process.

Project details

We have been working with a community member to prepare a new naming proposal for the laneway between Loftus and Fleet streets in Leederville.

The proposed name recognises Basil Manifis (1911-1963) for his charitable contributions to the local community.

This includes his role as Founding Secretary in 1939, later President, of the Australasian Hellenic Educational Progressive Association and contribution to various Hellenic sporting organisations, as well as assisting newly arrived Greek migrants to transition into Australian society.

He was also for many years the owner of a property directly adjacent to the laneway proposed for naming.

Manifis Lane satisfies Landgate’s criteria for a road name in that it:

  • is a single name element followed by a road type
  • does not duplicate an existing road name within the local government area
  • the name is not used in an existing street or place in WA.

It does not satisfy the Landgate criteria in that it is more than six letters long. This does not disqualify the name from being considered by Landgate after community approval.

If this proposal receives community support, we will submit a road naming application to Landgate.
