We asked what play equipment community would like to see here, and we now have two design options - which do you prefer?

Background

Constructed in 2004, the Hyde St Reserve playground, located on Forrest Street in Mt Lawley, is due for a refresh.

This neighbourhood reserve is fully gated and has beautiful big trees to provide plenty of shade, making it a cosy place for family gatherings and smaller events with young children.

in July and August 2025, we asked for feedback on play elements people would like to see there. We heard the majority:

  • wanted the play equipment to be suitable for 4-8 years as well as 0-4 years
  • preferred a spread-out or tower layout including swings, slides and climbing equipment
  • would accept mixed softfall and natural/existing shade, to ensure there is more equipment.

The playground renewal will be funded through the City's 2025/26 Capital Works budget and work is due to be completed in the 2025/26 financial year.

Project details

There are two design proposals, see below. Both options are based around platforms which vary in height and also offer different types of equipment and experiences. More detailed equipment descriptions for each are in Documents.

Please note, all proposed colour palettes are indicative only and the final installation may differ.

Option One - Six Platform (Big Dipper Slide)

Suitable for ages 3-12 years, offering 32 activities for 45+ participants.

The main attraction is a series of six platforms creating inclusive play spaces and activities, plus:

  • Climbers
  • Swings – infant and strap
  • Stair access
  • Slides
  • Tunnel
  • Multiple play panels

Option Two - Three Platform (Spiral Slide)

Suitable for ages 0-12 years, offering 16 activities to 25+ participants.

The main attraction is three activity platforms of different heights with a web tunnel, climbers and bridges, plus:

  • Open slide and main unit
  • Roto flower
  • Double bay swings
  • Activity panels
