Healthy Food and Drink Policy
Update
This consultation is now closed.
We received 17 responses and 65 per cent of those were supportive of the proposed policy.
A report was presented to the June 2024 Council meeting at which the Healthy Food and Drink Policy was adopted.
Background
The City of Vincent is seeking feedback on a proposed Healthy Food and Drink Policy.
In 2020, Vincent adopted a Public Health Plan which identifies ‘Healthy Eating’ as one of six priority health topics.
Healthy food and drink help in maintaining a healthy weight, as well as significantly contributing to health and wellbeing throughout life.
Being surrounded by unhealthy food and drink products and related advertising, can undermine people’s efforts to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
The City can play an active role in supporting people to enjoy healthy food and drink options by:
- increasing the availability and promotion of these products at City facilities, meetings, workshops, functions and community events
- providing environments free from unhealthy food and drink marketing and promotion.
A Healthy Food and Drink Policy has now been developed and at its February meeting, Council approved the proposed Policy for the purpose of community consultation.
Policy details
The purpose of this policy is to enable the City of Vincent to lead by example in supporting the provision and promotion of healthy food and drink at its venues and events.
Policy objectives include to:
- Provide and promote healthy and supportive environments where healthy food and drink is valued and encouraged;
- Create and maintain environments within the City, which support healthy food and drink;
- Increase community members, employees and contractors understanding of the importance of making healthy food and drink widely available;
- Consider the cultural, religious and dietary needs of the community when providing or promoting food and drink; and
- Consider the environmental impact of food and drink provision, minimising waste of food and packaging.
The Policy aligns with the Australian Dietary Guidelines and the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating and associated resources and guides.
The draft policy can be viewed in the document library to the right of this page.
