The City is proposing to name the laneway that is located between Angove Street, Albert Street, and Charles Street, crossing over Vine Street, in North Perth.

The proposed name (Hammill Lane) is in commemoration of Joshua Hammill who was the foundation Principal of the nearby North Perth Primary School.

North Perth Primary School are supportive of the naming. The school provided the City with a letter of endorsement for the naming proposal, which included the following:

"Public Education was an important part of his Joshua’s life, he spent 14 years (1899 – 1913) of his 37-year career at North Perth Primary School. In 1898, he founded the Teachers’ Union, and in the following years filled various roles including secretary, president and editor of the Teachers’ Journal. On his retirement, his service to the Teachers’ Union was recognised by his election to life membership, and in his obituary the service paid tribute to his memory, as a gifted colleague who gave ungrudging and sustained effort from his wealth of natural ability."

Hammill Lane satisfies Landgate’s criteria for a road name in that it:

  • is a single name element followed by a road type;
  • does not duplicate an existing road name within the local government area; and
  • the name is not used in an existing street or place in WA.

Hammill Lane does not satisfy the Landgate criteria in that it:

  • is more than six letters long.

This does not disqualify the name from being considered by Landgate after community approval.

Hammill Lane is considered pursuant to Criteria 2 of the City’s Road Naming Criteria – Vincent identities, including persons with historical connections to Vincent and a proven association with the area in which the naming proposal is located. This can include:

  • persons who have made a significant contribution to the area; and/or
  • persons who have made a significant contribution to the Vincent community.

Notes from our Local History Centre can be found in the Documents.
