Consultation has concluded

The City is proposing to name the lane that extends from Austen Lane to Tennyson Street, known in part as Lot 66 on Plan 1509, and located between Loftus, Tennyson and Scott Streets, and Austen lane in Leederville. The City is looking at proposing a name to Landgate, and we would like to know your thoughts about our proposal.

The laneway is currently unnamed.

Finial Lane

The proposed name is Finial Lane in reference to the prevalence of finials as a decorative design feature on dwellings in the area, and it appears to satisfy Landgate's naming standards.

A finial is defined in the Oxford Dictionary as:

Noun

A distinctive section or ornament at the apex of a roof, canopy, etc. on a building.

‘curving gables topped by sculptured finials’

Due to the strong presence of finials as decorative features on dwellings in area of the lane, and the presence of finials across both historical and more recent contemporary housing designs, the City supports in principle the proposal of the name ‘Finial Lane’.

Finial Lane satisfies the Landgate criteria for nomenclature in that it is:

  • No more than six letters long;
  • Is a single name element followed by a road type;
  • Does not duplicate an existing road name within the local government area; and
  • The name is not used in an existing street or place in WA.

To support the application, examples of finials present in the area have been photographed, and can be viewed in the Document Library.
