At the 28 May council Meeting, Vincent Council unanimously endorsed a draft Sustainable Environment Strategy for community consultation. This is the second Sustainable Environment Strategy created by the City of Vincent and builds on the success of the first.
The strategy will act alongside the City's Strategic Community Plan to ensure that we protect our environment and make the best use of our natural resources.
Since the adoption of the City's first Sustainable Environment Strategy in 2011, Vincent has made some strong steps in the right direction and we want to build on these achievements with the next strategy.
Since 2011, the City has:
reduced our reliance on fossil fuels
achieved platinum Waterwise status for sustainable water management, and were one of the first two councils to do so
increased our tree canopy cover on public land through tree planting and eco-zoning, and
developed a new Waste Strategy with a target of zero waste to landfill by 2028
The draft Sustainable Environment Strategy 2019-2024 is divided into five key focus areas of energy, transport, water, waste and urban greening & biodiversity. Under each area is a set of clear outcomes and strategies to help us meet these outcomes.
To develop the draft Sustainable Environment Strategy 2019 - 2024, we:
consulted with our community to find out what is most important when it comes to protecting and enhancing the environment
identified key opportunity areas where we can make the greatest difference
established baselines against which we can measure progress
identified actions to deliver on our community’s vision for a sustainable city
identified the modes of delivery for our actions, and
set targets for corporate and community outcomes that will keep us committed and accountable
