Draft Child Safe Awareness Policy
This consultation closed on 16 November 2023 and feedback has been reviewed.
A recommendation was presented to Council at their meeting on 12 December, at which Council adopted the new Child Safe Awareness Policy.
Background
The City of Vincent has developed a draft Child Safe Awareness Policy and would welcome your feedback.
The Royal Commission into Institutional Reponses to Child Sexual Abuse was established in January 2013 to investigate:
- systemic failures of public and private institutions to protect children from child sexual abuse
- how abuse was reported
- how organisations responded
It recommended a range of measures to support child safe organisations, including National Principles which provide a consistent approach to child safe cultures.
It also acknowledged the role local governments can play in creating, promoting and maintaining the safety and wellbeing of children and young people in their communities.
In March 2023, the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries (DLGSC) recommended local governments create their own Child Safe Awareness Policy.
At its September meeting, Council approved the proposed Child Safe Awareness Policy for the purposes of community consultation.
The draft policy is available to view in the document library to the right of this page.
Project details
The draft Child Safe Awareness Policy recognises Vincent is uniquely placed within our local community to show leadership and support in this area.
It provides a framework for how we can assist organisations to be child safe, protecting children and young people from harm and/or abuse, by:
- providing access to resources
- raising awareness
- sharing relevant information
The City of Vincent supports and values all children and young people, and this policy is one of the ways we can show our commitment to being child safe and having a zero-tolerance approach to child abuse.
To ensure a consistent state-wide approach in line with the Royal Commission's recommendations, the agreed objectives for the policy should remain unchanged.

What will happen next?
After this consultation period closes, we will summarise the feedback and update the policy as required. A report will then be presented to Council for consideration of any submissions and the adoption of any policy.
Everyone who provides feedback will be notified when the Policy is due to be considered by Council. Members of the public are welcome to attend the Council Briefing and Council Meeting to ask questions or comment on the proposal.
