Consultation has concluded

The City is proposing to name the laneway located between Matlock, Coogee and Green Streets, and Scarborough Beach Road, Mount Hawthorn, and will be submitting the name change to Landgate.

The proposed name (Coppock Lane) is in commemoration of the late Harold Tindall Coppock, who lived in Mount Hawthorn from approximately 1911 till 1960. He was a longstanding member of the Mount Hawthorn Congregational Church, and was a foundation, active, and life member of the former Mount Hawthorn Amateur Athletic Club from 1932 until about 1956. He served in the Military as a Platoon Commander in the 2/28 Battalion, principally in Tobruk, Syria, and New Guinea, and was renowned for his distinguished service.

Details of Mr Coppock’s contributions to the Mount Hawthorn community have been prepared by the applicant. The City of Vincent's Local History Centre have also compiled historical information. These can be found in the Document Library.

Coppock Lane satisfies Landgate’s criteria for a road name in that it:

  • is a single name element followed by a road type;
  • does not duplicate an existing road name within the local government area; and
  • is not in use in an existing street or place in WA.

Coppock Lane does not satisfy the Landgate criteria in that it:

  • is more than six letters long.

This does not disqualify the name from being considered by Landgate after community approval.

Coppock Lane is considered pursuant to Criteria 2 of the City’s Road Naming Criteria – Vincent identities, including persons with historical connections to Vincent and a proven association with the area in which the naming proposal is located. This can include:

  • persons who have made a significant contribution to the area; and/or
  • persons who have made a significant contribution to the Vincent community.

The City and Landgate agree that the background information on Mr Coppock and his contributions to the area provides justification for commemorative naming.

Where is the lane?

The lane identified for naming runs parallel to Matlock and Coogee Streets, between Scarborough Beach Road and Green Street, crossing Ellesmere and Woodstock Streets, in Mount Hawthorn.

The lane is currently split into 3 different parcels known as Lots 350, 352, and 355 on Plan 2503.

About the process

This laneway proposal was submitted to the City of Vincent by a community member. If a consultation receives more votes of opposition than votes of support, the proposal will not be continued. If a consultation receives more votes of support than opposition, the City will submit a road naming application to Landgate. Landgate will then approve or deny the application. The City will send letters to nearby residents and owners in regards to the outcome of this consultation. An alternative name for this laneway must be submitted via the online application form before the consultation period for this proposal closes. If an alternative name is found to be suitable, a separate consultation for that proposal will be advertised.
