Consultation has concluded

The City is proposing to name the laneway that is located between Albert Street, Vine Street, View Street and Charles Street, North Perth.

The proposed name (Carex Lane) relates to the nearby wetland at Smith’s Lake which is just across Charles Street and was part of a larger wetland area that previously stretched across the whole area of Charles Veryard Reserve and the current Smith’s Lake. Carex is the genus name for the species of grass like plants in the Cyperaceae family commonly known as ‘sedges’. Carex is found all over the world, particularly in wetland areas such as Smith’s Lake.

Carex Lane satisfies Landgate’s criteria for a road name in that it:

  • is a single name element followed by a road type;
  • does not duplicate an existing road name within the local government area;
  • the name is not used in an existing street or place in WA; and
  • is no more than six letters long.

Carex Lane is considered pursuant to Criteria 4 of the City’s Road Naming Criteria – Flora and fauna local to the area in which the naming proposal is located.

Notes from our Local History Centre can be found in the Document Library.
