Boobook Lane

The City is proposing to name the laneway extending between Scarborough Beach Road and Anzac Road, parallel to Matlock Street and The Boulevarde, in Mount Hawthorn.

The proposed name (Boobook Lane) is in tribute to the Southern Boobook Owl which is often found in the laneway and surrounding streets.

"The Boobook Owl is both a resident and a passage migrant in the Perth region. They are mainly recorded in the well wooded suburbs and parks of Perth especially during migration north in March-May and the return south in July-October. Pairs and family groups often migrate together and the territorial two-noted call 'boo-book' is a familiar night sound in the suburbs of Perth especially during autumn and spring. They are found throughout much of Australia and the name boobook is an aboriginal rendering from the eastern States of its call notes. They feed mainly on insects that become scarce during the winter months in the south-west and around the city mostly mice."

Boobook Lane satisfies Landgate’s criteria for a road name in that it:

• is a single name element followed by a road type;
• does not duplicate an existing road name within the local government area; and
• the name is not used in an existing street or place in WA.

Boobook Lane does not satisfy the Landgate criteria in that it:

• is more than six letters long.

This does not disqualify the name from being considered by Landgate after community approval.

Boobook Lane is considered pursuant to Criteria 4 of the City’s Road Naming Criteria – Flora and fauna local to the area in which the naming proposal is located.

Where is the lane?

The lane identified for naming is Lot 400 on Plan 54398, and Lot 11851 on Plan 190939. The lane extends between Scarborough Beach Road and Anzac Road, parallel to Matlock Street and The Boulevarde in Mount Hawthorn.

About the process

This laneway proposal was submitted to the City of Vincent by a community member. If a consultation receives community support, the City will submit a road naming application to Landgate. Landgate will then approve or deny the application.
