Allans Lane
Consultation has concluded
The City is proposing to name the laneway extending between Flinders and Coogee Streets, parallel to Scarborough Beach Road, in Mount Hawthorn.
The proposed name (Allans Lane) is in tribute to John Allans Hawthorn Shopping Centre, a prominent historic Vincent business. In the late 1950s, Mount Hawthorn was at the forefront of changing retail culture with the development of John Allans shopping arcade on the corner of Flinders Street and Scarborough Beach Road. The shopping centre stood at the site currently housing The Mezz from 1959 - 1980s.
Allans Lane satisfies Landgate’s criteria for a road name in that it:
- is a single name element followed by a road type;
- does not duplicate an existing road name within the local government area;
- the name is not used in an existing street or place in WA; and
- is no more than six letters long.
Allans Lane is considered pursuant to Criteria 3 of the City’s Road Naming Criteria – Prominent historic Vincent businesses, where the business has a historic association with the area and is proven to have existed over a substantial period of time and is held in strong regard by the community.
A document prepared by our Local History Centre can be found in the Document Library.
Where is the lane?
The lane identified for naming is located between Woodstock Street, Flinders Street, Scarborough Beach Road, and Coogee Street, Mount Hawthorn.
The naming is to be applied to part of Lot 351 on Plan 2503.
About the process
